LABRADOODLE HISTORY

LABRADOODLES WERE FIRST DEVELOPED IN THE 1970'S BY WALLY COCHRAN OF GUIDE DOGS VICTORIA IN KEW, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA AS ASSISTANCE DOGS FOR THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED. GUIDE DOGS VICTORIA HAD BEEN CONTRACTED BY A BLIND WOMAN THAT LIVED IN HAWAII AND SUFFERED FROM SEVERE ALLERGIES. SHE WANTED A DOG TO HELP HER IN EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES BUT WAS AFRAID TO GET A GUIDE DOG BECAUSE OF HER EXTREME REACTIONS TO DOG DANDER & FUR. WALLY COCHRAN PAIRED ONE OF THEIR PROVEN LABRADOR RETRIEVERS WITH A STANDARD POODLE AND "LABRADOODLES" WERE BORN.

AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLES VERSUS AMERICAN LABRADOODLES

AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLES MAY HAVE STARTED OUT BEING A LAB/POODLE CROSS BUT THEY HAVE EVOLVED INTO A BREED THAT ALSO HAS ENGLISH & AMERICAN COCKER SPANIELS, IRISH WATER SPANIELS, AND/OR CURLY COATED RETRIEVERS INFUSED INTO THE ORIGINAL LAB/POODLE CROSS. THE GENE POOL IS ALSO MUCH SMALLER SINCE ALL OF THE AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLES COME FROM THE ORIGINAL AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLE LINES.

AMERICAN LABRADOODLES DO NOT HAVE ANY OTHER BREEDS INFUSED INTO THE DIFFERENT VARIATION OF LAB/POODLE CROSSES. HENCE THEY HAVE A LARGER GENE POOL AND ARE KNOWN TO HAVE 'HYBRID VIGOR'.

BREEDERS HAVE BEGUN INFUSING AMERICAN LABRADOODLES WITH AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLES TO EXPAND THE AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLE GENE POOL AND IMPROVE THE AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLE LINES.

AMERICAN LABRADOODLE GENERATION CLASSIFICATIONS

F1 IS A POODLE BRED TO A LABRADOR RETRIEVER. THIS GENERATION IS CONSIDERED LOW SHED. THIS BREED CAN HAVE EITHER LONG OR SHORT HAIR. THE COAT IS USUALLY THICK AND SOMETIMES WAVY.

F1B IS A F1 LABRADOODLE BRED BACK TO A POODLE. THIS WILL CREATE THE LONGER HAIR THAT DOES NOT SHED AND THAT IS ALLERGY FREE. THE COAT IS USUALLY WAVY OR CURLY. THIS GENERATION HAS ALL THE DESIRABLE TRAITS OF A LABRADOODLE.

F2 IS A F1 LABRADOODLE BRED TO A F1 LABRADOODLE. THIS COMBINATION YOU GET THE SAME PERCENTAGE OF LAB POODLE MIX AS YOU WOULD WITH AN F1, WITH USUALLY A MORE DESIRABLE COAT AND LESS SHEDDING THAN WITH AN F1 LABRADOODLE.

F3 IS A F2 LABRADOODLE BRED TO A F2 LABRADOODLE OR A F1B LABRADOODLE BRED TO A F1B OR F1 LABRADOODLE. THIS BREEDING, IF DONE CORRECTLY GIVES YOU THE BEST COMBINATION FOR A NON SHEDDING AND ALLERGY FREE COAT.

MULTIGENERATIONAL- ANOTHER NAME FOR A F3 OR HIGHER GENERATION LABRADOODLE. NOT AS EASY TO FIND AS THE OTHER GENERATIONS.

COAT TYPES

HAIR COATS

HAIR COATS ARE THE EASIEST TO MAINTAIN. THEY DO NOT NEED MUCH GROOMING, SOMETIMES A LITTLE TRIMMING AROUND THE EYES AND CHIN. HAIR COATS ARE OFTEN CALL 'WASH & WEAR COATS'. THESE ARE USUALLY F1 GENERATION LABRADOODLES. THE HAIR IS USUALLY WAVY TO STRAIGHT WITH MORE THICKNESS THAN A LABRADOR RETRIEVERS COAT. THEY ARE LOW SHEDDING AND OCCASIONALLY NON SHEDDING.

CURLY OR WOOL COATS

CURLY OR WOOL COATS ARE NON SHEDDING AND HYPO-ALLERGENIC. THEY WILL NEED REGULAR BRUSHING. THE WOOL COAT IS ALWAYS CURLY AND IS USUALLY VERY SOFT TO THE FEEL.

FLEECE COATS

FLEECE COATS ARE NON SHEDDING AND ARE HYPO-ALLERGENIC AND WILL NEED TO BE BRUSHED REGULARLY TO PREVENT MATTING. FLEECE COATS ARE VERY SOFT TO THE TOUCH AND CAN GROW VERY LONG.
